Taman Safari Bali, one of Indonesia’s premier wildlife conservation centers and tourist destinations, joyfully conducted the sacred Tumpek Kandang ceremony on Saturday, May 18, 2024.

The Tumpek Kandang ceremony, celebrated every 6 months (210 days) precisely on Saniscara (Saturday) Kliwon Wuku Uye, holds deep cultural significance in Bali. It is an expression of gratitude and respect towards animals for their vital role in human life, encompassing cultural, social, and economic aspects.

On this special occasion, Taman Safari Bali expressed its appreciation to all the wildlife residing in its habitat through a sacred ceremony highlighted by the presentation of “gebogan.” Gebogan is a traditional Balinese offering made from various fruits and vegetables, presented to the animals as a symbol of gratitude and appreciation.

The Tumpek Kandang ceremony at Taman Safari Bali began with a prayer procession led by a Pemangku. The event was attended by animal keepers, staff representatives, and enthusiastic visitors eager to participate in this tradition. Not only humans, but the animals of Taman Safari Bali also participated in the ceremony. Some of the animals involved in the procession included Hyenas, Binturongs, Bayan Parrots, Bali Cows, Ponies, Iguanas, Elephants, and Orangutans. Their presence added to the splendor of the event.

During the prayer procession, the animals were blessed and sprinkled with holy water. Despite displaying varied reactions, the animals appeared calm, as if understanding the significance behind the prayer procession. This moment enriched the spiritual bond between humans and animals at Taman Safari Bali.

“We proudly celebrate the Tumpek Kandang ceremony, a cultural heritage that we hold in high regard as a testament to our dedication to caring for and honoring the animals under our care,” stated Jesica Helena, Operation Manager of Taman Safari Bali. “This ceremony not only represents a part of our cultural tradition but also serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to protect and appreciate the existence of wildlife, which are also our fellow inhabitants on this planet.”

The climax of the celebration was the presentation of the gebogan directly to the animals. This procession symbolized the reciprocal relationship between animals and humans in maintaining ecological balance and enriching human life experiences. The animals were seen happily enjoying the fruits and vegetables, witnessed by ceremony participants and visitors of Taman Safari Bali with joy and delight.

Through the organization of the Tumpek Kandang ceremony, Taman Safari Bali reaffirms its commitment to conservation, education, and the well-being of all living beings. This ceremony serves as a reminder for us all to always respect and appreciate wildlife.

“Taman Safari Bali is the perfect place to learn more about wildlife and see them in their natural habitat. Here, you can observe a variety of animals from around the world and participate in various engaging educational programs,” Said Jesica.
