The Trail of The Kings (TOTK) 2024 Zero Edition welcomed 736 runners from 12 countries, marking an impressive start for this international-standard cross-country event, organized by  Lake Toba Authority Implementing Agency/ Badan Pelaksana Otoritas Danau Toba (BPODT). Held in the scenic Samosir Regency, Lake Toba, from May 4 to 5, 2024, the event featured diverse categories including the Fun Run 5K and 10K, and the more challenging Trail Run 27K and 50K. Participants hailed from Indonesia and 11 other countries, including China, the Netherlands, Japan, Kenya, Norway, Egypt, the United States, Malaysia, Singapore, Germany, and India.

At the event’s conclusion on Sunday, May 5, BPODT Director Jimmy Panjaitan expressed his pride and enthusiasm. “The TOTK Zero Edition had a tremendous impact on North Sumatra, particularly on Lake Toba’s tourism. We plan to continue this event next year, with hopes of securing UTMB licensing,” said Panjaitan. He emphasized the event’s role in empowering local communities, involving 12 villages as marshals, food and beverage providers, and cleaning staff, which directly boosted local incomes and skills.

The organizers are optimistic that TOTK Zero Edition’s success will pave the way for its inclusion in the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) World Series. The event categories eligible for UTMB assessment were the 27K and 50K, while the 5K and 10K fun runs catered to beginners and recreational runners. The event also welcomed CG Lim, Head of Operations for The Ironman Group, Asia region, adding further credibility and international attention.

BPODT collaborated with Creation Sport Division to organize the event, aiming to provide a unique experience for all participants. The runners traversed the stunning landscapes of the Toba Caldera Geopark, experiencing mountains, lakes, rivers, and traditional villages. The route followed the migration paths of ancient Batak kings and offered breathtaking views of Mount Pusuk Buhit, a legendary site in Batak mythology.

The event received overwhelmingly positive feedback. Hendra Lim from Medan highlighted the route’s beauty and the event’s organization, calling it a “very satisfying and unforgettable running experience.” Thimo Kilberth from Germany praised the clear marking, supportive marshals, and excellent water stations, rating TOTK a five-star event.

In addition to the run, participants engaged in sustainable tourism activities, such as tree planting in Sianjur Mula Mula Village, demonstrating TOTK’s commitment to environmental preservation and community empowerment. Elite runners also enjoyed a complimentary tour of Samosir Island and participated in cultural activities, including a dancing fountain show and a Welcome Dinner hosted by local dignitaries.

Jimmy Panjaitan emphasized the broader impact of TOTK, noting that the influx of international runners and their companions boosted local tourism and spending. “TOTK enhances Indonesia’s international event calendar, aligning with President Joko Widodo’s directive to increase and improve world-class events in the country,” Panjaitan concluded.
